Look up the story of Stuart Hamblen, who wrote It's No Secret (What God Can Do). An alcoholic who had a famously popular radio show which he would do drunk and was sponsored by alcohol companies who regularly bailed him out of jail after his escapades, he became a Christian and lost his show after becoming sober and refusing the sponsorship of the same companies who had contributed to- and in fact paid for- his slow descent to rock bottom. His listeners decided they didn't like him sober and he wound up almost destitute in the ensuing years. One day he was talking with a friend about it, and how he was grateful to have made that trade, and when the guy asked him why, he responded "It's no secret what God can do." His mate replied "I'm not into that stuff, but that's a good title for a song."
That song became a massive hit and was covered by Elvis, who then famously ate himself to a unglamorous death on a toilet.
lyrics
Bring the house lights down, the audience is here,
Another drop or two will take away the fear,
And it's been so long now you wonder if you knew
What you were running from, or rather running to
If you're not part of the chatter,
then you think that you don't matter,
But the world keeps getting madder
Up this never-ending ladder
The spectacle that you became was just a thing to entertain,
A show before their eyes,
A thousand hands around, and all applauding as they watched you fall
To something you despised,
But never filled the emptiness, or ever seemed to catch the tears you cried.
Are the empty seats a reflection of your soul?
Is the crowd's applause just meant to fill that hole?
And when the party's gone, and all have turned away,
The only thing they've given you, all that you have left to say is
Since you're not part of the chatter,
Then you never really mattered,
But the world keeps getting madder
Up this never-ending ladder
The spectacle that you became was just a thing to entertain,
A show before their eyes,
A thousand hands around, and all applauding as they watched you fall
To something you despised,
But never filled the emptiness, or ever seemed to catch the tears you cried.
Don't see me, I know,
Don't leave me, I'll go,
This all was for show,
Believe me, I know,
Come see me, it's true,
I'm not hiding from you,
It's no secret what God can do
The spectacle that you became was just a thing to entertain,
A show before their eyes,
A thousand hands around, and all applauding as they watched you fall
To something you despised,
But never filled the emptiness, or ever seemed to catch the tears you cried.
